HMI® / SE
More than 50 years ago, film and television producers turned to OSRAM for an economical, efficient alternative to incandescent light — and the HMI® lamp was born. The technology has since earned an OSCAR®, a Primetime Emmy® Engineering Award and a PLASA Innovation Award, and HMI® lamps remain an integral part of film sets worldwide. The powerful HMI® series serves the entertainment industry at every level, from professional film productions to small theatrical events.
HMI® lamps are AC-operated metal-halide discharge lamps with excellent colour rendering and photometric integrity throughout their life. With an extremely bright output — up to 100 lumens per watt — they generate a colour temperature that closely matches sunlight, revealing true colours and enabling daytime filming outdoors. Dimmable and capable of hot restart, they are up to five times more efficient than incandescent light.
Key features and benefits

HMI Digital lamps
Robust, flicker-free lamps that deliver a steady performance on set or on stage.
Advanced filming technology needs advanced set lighting. Most productions now rely heavily on digital film, which brings its own benefits and challenges — especially for lighting. To meet them, OSRAM modernised its professional, high-performance HMIR lamps, trusted on film sets, stages and television studios for decades. The new HMIR Digital line keeps the benefits professionals expect from the HMIR name and adds flicker-free lighting when operated at 1000 Hz and above with high-speed electronic ballasts.
